DAY 5 - MATTHEW WEST “BROKEN THINGS” DEVO SERIES “But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” (Luke 14:10-11) The story of the Prodigal Son is a timeless tale that’s taken on countless forms even outside of the Christian religion. Why? Because the story is so powerful, and every single one of us resonates so deeply with his plight. The reason it connects with people in all walks of life is simple. We’ve all been the prodigal, haven’t we? We’ve all made decisions that have propelled us down a dark path we never expected to find ourselves walking. We’ve all lost our way, disappointing the ones we love most along the journey. But really, I think the story of the Prodigal Son continues to capture our attention because of the twist ending. When he finally comes home, we never expect his father’s reaction. We always think, like the Prodigal Son, we’ll be met with condemnation, shame, retribution, and punishment when we return to the place we call home. Yet, the Prodigal Son found open arms, an expectant heart and a loving father who didn’t even let him make it all the way up the driveway before running down to meet him. And if that wasn’t enough, his father lavished him with gifts"gifts he surely didn’t deserve. To top it all off, he threw a party in his honor. It’s a beautiful picture of how our Heavenly Father feels about us. No matter what we’ve done or the place we find ourselves in, we can always come home. He’s there, waiting with outstretched arms. And He’s ready to throw a party for us. His love is unconditional. His grace is abundant. And His parties? Well, they really can’t be outdone. There’s an empty seat at His table…and it’s waiting for you. Grace is a kingdom / With gates open wide / There’s a seat at the table just waiting for you / So, come on inside

DAY 4 - MATTHEW WEST “BROKEN THINGS” DEVO SERIES If you’re feeling weak, inadequate or disqualified, you’re in good company. Psalm 34:7 says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” In the midst of struggle, it’s often hard to see past our own darkness. It’s difficult to view life outside of our current circumstances. We tend to live in a constant state of never. We’re never going to land the dream job. We’re never going to get married. We’re never going to be given that promotion. We’re never going to get out of debt. We’re never going to mend that relationship. We’re never going to write that book, open that business, take that vacation…and the list goes on and on. We automatically assume our state of affairs will never change. Well, there’s good and bad news on that front. Change is the natural progression of life. If anything is certain in this life, it’s change"for better or for worse. But the better news? We serve a God who never changes. He doesn’t waver, no matter the circumstances. His love and care for us is strong and steadfast. Psalm 147:3 says, “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” Perhaps the broken among us are the luckiest. They are the ones at the feet of Jesus watching Him compassionately tend to their wounds. They are the ones who get to savor His presence. What a gift. When we’re broken, God is there to make us whole. He not only wants to repair what is broken; He wants to make us new. We may feel like we have nothing suitable to bring the King of Kings, when in reality, all He wants is a heart fully submitted to Him. Bring your wounds; bring your hurt, bring your emptiness. He will put the pieces back together and make something beautiful out of your brokenness. Now I’m just a beggar in the presence of a King / I wish I could bring so much more / But if it’s true You use broken things / Then here I am Lord, I’m all Yours
